Alta High School PAC

Sandy, UT

Alta High School Performing Arts Center is a state-of-the-art facility located in Sandy Utah. The Performing Arts Center is a 62,431 square foot, free-standing arts building. Its tilt-up concrete panels raised the state record for height by nine feet and two inches, with the tallest panel reaching a stunning 75 feet and eight inches with some weighing 135,000 pounds.

The Performing Arts Center features 1,374 seats and a woven bird’s-nest pattern that mimics Alta’s hawk mascot nest. The exterior metal panels have a straw-like pattern in grey and red tone accents that match the high school’s colors. With the auditorium located directly in the center of the structure, the Performing Arts Center truly is a hawk nest.

The inside of the building features a full fly loft and an orchestra pit. There are large acoustic wall panels that are the tallest in the United States to help balance the sound in the auditorium. In order to have the auditorium feel even larger than it is, VCBO designed the room to be darker at the floor level and lighter at the top.

Seventy feet above the stage is the catwalk and rigging systems. Below the stage, is the center’s own air conditioning and heating system. Behind the stage, there are costume changing rooms, a green room to warm up in for musical or theatrical productions, and a make-up room with abundant lighting as well as storage spaces. Immediately outside the auditorium are men’s and women’s restrooms with 16 stalls, as well as unisex restrooms.
